November 2012 saw the release of Kelissa's EP 'Rebel In Disguise', a dynamic prelude to her upcoming debut album 'Kelimanjaro'. 'Afrika' was the first single released from the EP, as a part of her '50 days in Afrika' tour. Having traveled around and lived on the continent of Africa, Kelissa expressed experiencing a feeling of enlightenment towards her heritage. "I came to the realization that we in the Diaspora have a deep rooted connection to the African continent, its people and cultures. In the west we have been denied of this knowledge somewhat, so this song is an expression of that dynamic," she professed further reiterating a quote by Chester Higgins jr, "We are not African because we are born in Africa, We are Africans because Africa is born in us."
The song was co-produced by herself (Anbessa productions) and Jamar"Chronixx" McNaughton of ZincFence Records. It models sounds typical of traditional African instruments and arrangements to capture the roots and true African essence of the song.
Kush Asher and Nisha Rebel directed the video, shot in 6 countries; Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Ethiopia and Kenya from last year's 50 Days in Afrika tour. The video takes us along Kelissa's musical journey, accompanied by Mykal Cushnie and Donisha Prendergast as she travels to these different countries on the continent. It was edited by Nicholas Bird and completed in the form of a documentary.
Kelissa shared she has lots more in store for fans as she works on her album and several other projects. "This year, continuously working on new music for my album Kelimanjaro, for collaborations, singles, videos etc. I'm currently working on a health and fitness campaign with my sister Kamila McDonald, using the music to fuel positive behaviour change. We stay creating, so lots of great things to come out of this year ;) stay tuned!!"
