Youths shine at ART’ical Exposure

Thursday, August 19th, 2010 by admin

KINGSTON, JAMAICA – Bookophilia’s parking lot was transformed last Friday for a splendid display of young talent and energy. The 92 Hope Road bookstore was the venue for the first of three literary and musical showcases grouped under the banner, ART’ical Exposure. The theme for the night was ‘Poetic License’ with its focus on the spoken word.

Andrea Dempster, owner for Bookophilia, expressed that the event was “a huge success and really gave everyone a taste of the arts and crafts – culinary, visual arts, performing arts, music and, of course, the literary arts.”

Headliners Yashika Graham and Ganja displayed two fundamentally different styles of expression, Yashika being calmly seated as opposed to Ganja’s standing projection of verbal blitz. The final headliner, Jason Worton uttered his poetry smoothly against the backdrop of his acoustic guitar. A number of open mic segments gave volunteer participants the chance to perform in front of a sizeable and attentive audience.

“We’re very happy with the turnout and support we got on Friday,” said promoter, Peter Wright. “The overall feedback was very positive although we noticed some room for improvement. We will be working to ensure that the next event provides an even better experience for our patrons.”

According to Dempster, “Anyone who missed it should plan to come out and enjoy parts two and three!”

The next ART’ical Exposure will happen on August 27 with the theme ‘Roots Rock,’ featuring the likes of Protoje, Janine “Jah9” Cunningham and Naptali. The third and final event of the series, ‘Rhyme & Reason,’ will be held on September 10 with Kabaka Pyramid, Five Steez and Kariuki leading the pack. Shaq the MC will continue hosting duties and music will be provided by DJ Sawandi.

The event is organized by Manifesto|Jamaica, a new youth-run non-governmental organization working to empower young people through Arts and Culture. There is no admission cost for ART’ical Exposure but patrons are asked to make donations in aid of the Manifesto|Jamaica Festival of ART’ical Empowerment to be held October 14-17 at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts.

Another upcoming Manifesto|Jamaica fundraiser is the Seh Sup’m: Omega Vibration on August 29.

Etana emanates a memorable performance at Sumfest Int’l Night

Monday, August 2nd, 2010 by admin

Patrons at Reggae Sumfest’s International Night one experienced a superb performance from Etana. She delivered one of the her finest presentations to date, according to her peers and industry insiders. The night went well and lived up to the great expectations despite threatening weather conditions.

She made her grand stage entrance with her talented dance troop in tow, all moving to the beat of the 2010 world cup anthem. The audience was already excited from her call to centre stage, evident from the screams and flashing camera lights throughout the venue. The reigning queen of conscious reggae, wasted no time in unleashing a musical onslaught with songs from her catalogue of hits. She flaunted a new look, a fiery red-hot hairdo and an elegant earthly coloured gown that her fans seemed to appreciate.

Reggae Sumfest is all about bringing to the stage the best one can offer and Etana made sure she scored on all cards for the greatest Reggae show on Earth. She pleased her on watchers throughout her full length set of over 45 minutes, without intermission. Utilising chart toppers such as, ‘Warrior Love’, ‘Wrong Address’, ‘I am Not Afraid’, ‘Roots’, ‘Blessings’, ‘Free’ and ‘August Town’, it seemed effortless in having her way with reggae rockers. Her new single, “People Talk” from the upcoming album, “Free Expressions” was also a crowd pleaser. She also executed excellent renditions from icons: Earth Wind and Fire, Jimmy Cliff and Marcia Griffiths which, was met with waving support from the massive crowd.

Her vibrant dance troop expressed through dance the message the singer shared passionately through the microphone. As a headliner for the world class event, Etana was well aware of the task at hand and did remarkably well in satisfying the thousands who supported the event.

Immediately after her performance flooding of comments and praises via the social media sites Twitter, Facebook, and MySpace commenced. Fans from around the globe took the time to express their pleasure. Reflecting on her performance, Etana“I am fully satisfied with what I did on stage. I had a great time and would like to thank my team and fans for giving the motivation to give my all.” uttered.

Lyndo new single Babylon and interview

Monday, August 2nd, 2010 by admin

New up and coming Artist Lyndo has done it again with his new single titled “Babylon” on the
Aftermath riddim. The artist whose real name is Lennox Lindo continues to deliver witty lyrics
with a delicious touch of versatility. This new single is easy to relate to as it speaks about the
daily struggle of Jamaicans and hustlers worldwide. Born and raised in Red hills, coming from
humble upbringings Lyndo knows all too well about the struggles of life, and double standards
imposed by a failing system (Babylon).

With previous international hit singles like “di best” which was produced by British based
recording company (Speakworld Entertainment) fans have been left wanting more. I am
pleased to say that “Babylon” has delivered the knockout punch which was needed to cement
Lyndo among the new generation of talented Deejays taking dancehall industry by storm.
It is palpable that he is very focused on music and should be one to keep an eye on in the
future. His energy and professionalism is not something that is abundant in the music industry
nowadays. It almost seems that he pours his very soul into his music, and the projection of his
powerful vocals relay a story of his entire being.

After recording the new single Lyndo and I sat down for a short interview and this is what he had
to say:

INTERVIEWER:

Ieye shoots video for second single “I know”

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010 by admin

Weeks after topping major charts with her first single ‘Mama’s Hand’, Ieye, new comer discovered by star maker Clifton “Specialist” Dillon, hits the set once more to shoot the video for “ I Know” the second single from her debut album entitled “Fevergrass”. In this new single Ieye demonstrates her smooth and commanding vocals while confirming her belief in the “Most High”. Directed by Ras Tingle from TD Films, the videos concept is abstract and incorporates the use of dance and an orchestra playing live instruments.

“As you will see the concept used is very clean, sophisticated and edgy, a direction which is currently used in most international videos”, Tingle explains. “It’s my second time working with Ieye and Specialist as a veteran, it is always a pleasure working with this team as I am able to utilise my creative skills as a director while gaining some insight and experience from the Specialist himself,” Tingle says.

Ieye is ecstatic about her new video and her journey as a new artiste, “this is my second video and I feel great about it! I feel like I’m reaching people and places, I had a great feeling about the first video “Mama’s Hand” and I have the same feeling now, so I’m happy and I hope Jamaica and the world will embrace it!” Ieye says.

Ieye is working on other major projects this summer including another video with label mate, Italian reggae super star Alborosie and a 5-week tour of Europe. Other singles from the “Fevergrass” album will be released this summer on a major Label. Look out for the premiere of “I know” on major television stations this week.
