The music industry has undoubtedly produced some amazing female talents. Many have been branded by fans and peers with titles such as, ‘The Queen Of Soul’, ‘ The Queen Of Hip Hop’, ‘The R&B Princess’, ‘The Queen Of Reggae’, and so on…and with good reason! However, what title would you place on a female artist who is so diverse, there is no moniker to describe her outside her name? Simply, Malica! That’s the only label necessary, as musically she cannot be limited by stereotypes. It’s very rare to find any artist who can adapt and master all genres effortlessly…Malica does, and that’s her appeal. Malica Martin is the first female vocalist signed to K..Licious Music Group by the CEO and four time Grammy Award winning producer, Tony ‘CD’ Kelly.
Born in Brooklyn, New York to Jamaican parents, Malica grew up in Kingston’s Duhaney Park, as well as America’s largest city, New York. This geographical and cultural contrast provided Malica the best of both worlds musically. Growing up, Malica’s father owned one of Kingston, Jamaica’s most popular sound systems, ‘Love Vibration Disco’, and was influenced daily by a plethora of music and musicians, Malica’s musical destiny was inevitable.
Artists such as Barrington Levy, Beenie Man, Professor Nuts, Sanchez, Gladys Knight, Sade, Marcia Griffiths and others were instrumental in Malica’s decision to pursue a career in music. Once her parents realized that her passion for music was more of a destiny than a desire, she was given singing lessons, and entered into various talent competitions. Self-assured and determined, Malica took voice lessons in everything ranging from Gospel and R&B to Opera. No limits!
Her dancing skills were also highlighted, and coupled with her amazing range and vocal ability; this aided her onstage performance tremendously.
Her response to Neyo’s track ‘So Sick’ got mainstream attention as it was somehow leaked by a program director. This resulted in airplay for this relatively unknown artist – quite the accomplishment out the gate. She has performed at venues such as ‘Universal Studios’, ‘Hard Rock’, ‘House Of Blues’, and graced the stage at Miami’s annual ‘Best Of The Best’ concert. She has also shared the spotlight with acts ranging from Buju Banton and Shaggy, to Nick Cannon and Snoop Dogg. As a writer, she has shared writing sessions with a multitude of talents such as Lamb, Anesha & Antea of APLUS, and more.
She has recorded tracks for a variety of producers including, Jam 2, Rodney Jerkins, JonJon, Seanizzle, and the legendary Tony ‘CD’ Kelly, just to name a few. Her vocal stylings has even made it’s way to Portugal, as she was featured on the single ‘All Night Long’, from an album by the late great recording artist, Angélico Vieira.
Malica’s music is a reflection of all the genres for which she has tremendous respect. As a newly signed artist, fans can expect a great deal from Malica in 2013 and beyond.
