You might have heard his radio hit, '..One Woman Kill Nature'.. playing all over FM radio, but I-Maroon isn't your garden variety deejay singing about sexuality, this Downsound Records artiste has a deep soul and the heart to match. .. ...."I look at life deeply, I see it as a spiritual trod, that's why I take the name, I-Maroon, I see myself as a freedom fighter," he said... Born Barrington Dixon on February 6, 1973, - incidentally the same birthday as Bob Marley -- in St Elizabeth, he attended Elderslie Primary and All Age, but during his spare time, he managed to make a name in his community with his lyrical skills before launching out on his own to establish himself as a deejay. .. "I used to listen to the radio a whole heap as a youth, especially Barry G. Dem time deh they used to play the tune on the radio, then the version fi a two or three minutes after. Mi used to practice and deejay on the version dem time deh," he stated. .. Pretty soon, he became the youngest youth from his district to ever deejay on the local sound system that would set up every Friday, and the reaction to his performances convinced him he was destined for a greatness in the music industry. Suitably emboldened, he did what any poor rural youth would have done in his time, he packed his belongings and jumped on a truck to the big city, Kingston. .. "My first journey to town was on an export market truck and I never went back since," he noted. .. Oddly though he never went back, he never forgot his rural upbringing and took the unusual name of I-Maroon, to pay homage to his Accompong Maroon heritage, and remind himself of who Barrington Dixon really is. .. He stayed in Waterford with relatives, and began to visit the Mixing Lab where I started 'voicing' for a foreign producer. His first single was ..Sample Yu Gold Pot.., while his follow up tunes include ..Sweet Little Girl.. (with Prince Melody), and more recently ..Car Tief.., a tale based on a personal experience. .. He wrote ..Car Thief.. because he lost his car to a female 'con-artist'. However it was when he hooked up with deejay Harry Toddler for the song, 'Bun Up Bun Up Dem' for Downsound Records that he found a camp that he could establish himself as a serious artiste. His follow-up records, 'Gassy Mouth Dread' and 'Country Girl' soon established him as a serious artiste with lyrics that come at the listener from left field. .. "Peace is what I am fighting for. When Cudjoe signed the peace treaty and rebelled against the British to overcome oppression, it seemed like centuries ago, but we are still enslaved right now, mentally, economically and politically. Music can teach the people to see that oppression and rise to overcome it," he said. .. ..He has performed at shows such as 'Sting', 'Follow Di Arrow', the Downsound-produced show, 'Countdown' in Montego Bay...
