Taking a journey with Sizzla PDF Print E-mail
The rise and transformation of Sizzla Kalonji into one of Jamaica's most prolific entertainers is captured visually and musically in The Journey: The Very Best Of Sizzla Kalonji.

A two disc compilation, the first disc features 21 of Miguel Collins' (Sizzla Kalonji) musical hits throughout the years. The second disc showcases the making of Kalonji, giving an insider's look at one of the more mysterious and intriguing artistes in the business.

The DVD contains an exclusive RETV documentary filmed at Judgement Yard, an interview with the artiste by Robbo Ranx and two music videos for Thank You Mama and Rise To The Occasion. There is also a 12-page booklet containing extensive liner notes charting the history of Sizzla Kalonji.

Starting off with Dry Cry, a song that cemented the artiste into super stardom, the mellow side of Kalonji is the focus of this album. For the raw shouty side look to the DVD where the artiste talks about the enigma that he is. The hits continue with the uplifting Be Strong and Praise Ye Jah, the song that brought Sizzla to the attention of the world. The hits continue with the more dancehall flavoured Rise To The Occasion and the memorable Black Woman And Child. There is also a bonus unreleased track entitled The Solution.

Solid cultural songs

While there are a number of recognisable hits on the album, there are other solid cultural songs that persons might not be as familiar with, including In This Time featuring Luciano and Africa Prepare, among others. However one would have liked to see some of the newer Sizzla tracks such Take Myself Away that is similar in content to his older material and would better embody his journey including his recent hip hop experimental work.

clean content

The lyrical content is clean, smart, diverse and relevant, while the beats are varied so that listeners won't get bored listening to the entire album.Vocally we get the range of Kalonji, from the 'normal' singing voice, to the more grave undertones and the impossibly high-pitched notes that only Sizzla can achieve.

One would expect a journey CD to encompass the whole experience and changes of an artiste, however, the more controversial tracks, especially those that touch on homosexuals are conveniently excluded, leaving the early and cleaner version of the artiste's work. For an artiste still young in the business, in terms of age, it is an accomplishment to have released a greatest hits album. This one for Sizzla fans is a definite keepsake.
